NEW UPDATE: It appears as though Google updated the pagerank toolbar as of December 6th 2013.

Google PageRank is a way that Google ranks pages on websites using a scale of 1 – 10. Sites that are well optimized and that have strong backlinks are higher on the scale then those that don’t. See the graphic below which shows different websites and how they rank.

google pagerank explained

Many people use Google pagerank to determine how well their brand is being received on the internet. As you can see from the picture above, sites like Ebay, ESPN, and GE have high rankings. While sites like Swingline do not rank as high. However, a pagerank of 5 is still solid and would be considered in the “Average” category. Most sites fall in the “Below Average” – “Average” categories, so don’t feel bad if that is where your site is currently. It takes years of optimizing and backlinking to get to an “Elite” status. However, you can still rank for less competitive long tail keywords without having a pagerank.

Although it is unclear when Google will update the pagerank toolbar, we do have the history of when they have updated it in the past to give us a better idea of when the next update will come out.
